I'm sure that whatever he picks out, she will love; however, I used to work in a jewelry store. Here's what I'd suggest.

It would be a better investment if he could put his money into fewer, but larger stones. The diamonds in the band are set in an illusion setting. There's more white gold than there are diamonds in the band and light can't very well get under the diamonds to make them shine, so it's kind of a waste. There are openings on the side, though, and that will help. Still, the diamond chips and the white gold prongs that hold them in place detract from the sparkle of the single, larger stone.

What you see at the link you provided is an enlarged version of the ring. Look at it at actual size; the smaller diamonds in the band will blend in with the white gold setting. That's why it's designed that way; it's gives that illusion. (Same kind of thing when viewing a ring at the jewelry store. Look at the ring under natural light--not the intense spotlights in the store. Those are meant to bring out the sparkle, but who lives with that kind of lighting?) Those smaller stones can only be appreciated up close and in the best light. You wouldn't believe how quickly they collect dirt. She'll have to clean the ring often, and too much jewelry cleaner will cause the prongs to deteriorate, which could easily lead to losing a stone. After it's all said and done, no one's really going to notice those smaller stones, so it's best to put the money for all those "chips" into 1-3 larger stones.

If he really likes having the stones in the band, then why not just have fewer of them in a larger size and only in the wedding band--not in the engagement ring, too? He'll get more bang for his buck.

Another thing to consider is the height of the ring. It seems to be designed to sit high, which means it will get caught on hose, glove--even scratch her husband in the throes of passion. (Mine does.) I would suggest a ring with stones that sit lower on her finger.

And, yes, as others have suggested, he really should look at the ring through a loop at the store. He needs to know the quality of the stone, the actual color (diamonds come in various shades), and where all the flaws and inclusions are. A perfect stone will be out his price range, but he needs to ensure that he's getting what he's paying for. After all, purchasing the Ring Set sight unseen means he could be getting a stone that's cloudy or with flaws visible to the naked eye. He should insist on an appraisal for insurance purposes and in case at some point in the future they want to trade up for an even nicer ring. In short, before he heads out to the jewelry store, he needs to do his homework and learn to speak the jeweler's language. They can see a sucker from a mile away.

Oh, and one last piece of advice: Jewelry mark-up at most retail stores is 300%, so if he doesn't get one on sale, he's throwing a big chunk of his money away.
