Why would McCain have to mention that he is a "maverick" in his closing of the debate?

Wouldn't that be a term placed on you by others. Why would he feel the need to "ring his own bell"! Anyway, over the last year, McCain is nothing even close to a "maverick", he is more like a "robot" for the current administration!

Because he realized that Obama had painted him as Senator deregulator, and the man that supports Bush 90% of the time. It was too little too late.

The polls show that Senator deregulator did will with 38% of America. Obama did well with the rest.

Obama did well with Old people for the first time.

He won among old white men.

He did better with women.

Obama won in every demographic group.

Obama was cool as a cucumber while McCain was Cranky. McCain seemed to know that Obama had him when he got angry often.

McCain wanted to make Obama look dangerous. Obama wanted to make McCain look like the old guy that was going to be more of the same.

McCain angrily protested throughout referencing things that most of the audience could not remember falling into Obama's trap.

Obama answered questions clearly and directly opting to not use humor coming off cool and authoritative. Definitely not dangerous.

Usually debates mean nothing but this one may have been the knock out blow for Senator deregulator.
