fishing line: matching braided line to rod?

I"ve been trying to match my gear up better,,, if a rod says 10-17 pound line,,,,should i use a braided line that is equivelent to 10-17 mono when it comes to diameter? I know braided line my be 30 pound test but have a diameter of a 8 pound mono........ so does a 30 pound braided work on a rod that recommends 10-17 mono?

You can use any braided line that has an equivalent or smaller diameter than the monofilament for which the rod was intended.

For the most part, matching the mono line diameter is overkill. Anything in the 25-30 pound range would be more than enough to handle the fish that you can reasonably expect to catch on your rod. Remember, the weight listed on the line is the continuous tensile strength that the line can withstand, not the weight of the fish that it can be trusted to catch. With your drag properly set, any line (especially braided) can catch fish many times heavier than the line's tensile strength. For example, 20 pound stripers can be easily caught on 12, 10, and even 8 pound lines.

Trusting your rod's recommended line weight can mislead you, though. Spinning and casting rods are not engineered with the line weight in mind, they're engineered with the weight of the lure/bait in mind. Usually, the lure weight is proportional to the weight of the fish which the rod is designed to catch. Using your 10-17# rod as an example, it's probably designed to throw lures in the 1/2 oz to 1 oz range, and to target fish from 10 to 30 or 40 pounds. I'd use such a rod for catfish or for striped bass.

Spinning and casting rods are much more forgiving than fly rods when it comes to what size lines and lures you use with them, though. Your rod will easily handle a lighter lure, and you can probably abuse it by chunking some 2-4 oz lures and reasonably expect it to hold up. Generally, the heavier your lure, the farther you can expect to cast. Also, the larger your lure, the bigger a fish you can expect to catch on average. Don't let this fool you into using cartoonishly large lures all the time, though--you obviously can't catch a fish bigger than the biggest in your location. Also, big fish may take smaller lures, but small fish can rarely handle large lures, so you limit the percentage of the available fish you can potentially catch when you upsize your lure.

I'm getting a bit off subject. Anyway, you can string your rod one of three ways: a stronger braid of identical diameter to the 10-17 pound lines, a longer length of (thinner) braided line in the original 10-17 pound range, or a compromise of both increased line strength and increased line capacity. I'd probably go with the third option. You can fit a LOT of 20 pound braid on a rod designed for 10-17 pound monofilament--possibly more than an entire 150 yard spool. Don't go too crazy with the line strength, though: you want the line to be the weakest link in your tackle setup. Imagine snagging a log and having your rod or reel break instead of your line! Of course, a smart alternative would be to use a braid as strong as you like, and to tie on a 10-15 foot leader of monofilament. Then if you snag, you lose only a few feet of inexpensive mono. You can then scale the strength of the mono up or down (never more than the braid, though) in order to match the fish that you're targeting.
