Ok I'm trying to find the name to an old (maybe 80's) kids sci fi drama. It was a live action show, and I think that it might have been shown on bbc.

It was a TV serial involving a boy who travels around with an artificial intelligence/droid. The AI/droid is the one character that sticks out, but I cannot place its name. It was gold, half the size of R2 D2 and it travelled around by hovering. It could also speak with the boy, to give him guidance. I think the boy had to carry out maintenance on the AI/Droid from time to time when it got damaged.

I don't remember the plot too well, but I do remember the child and the AI/droid always had to be on the move. I know they were always on the look out for a man and women dressed in black. I think the two in black were sent to hunt the child and AI/droid. I believe they were armed with lasers too.

I'm not sure if it was the boy protecting the AI/droid, or vice versa.
