TAG Heuer, Chopard, Tissot & Others Design Watches for Race Car Events by Chandra Coleman

There is something about luxury watches and makers of luxury automobiles that go hand in hand; it's probably the reasoning that if someone spends $100,000 on a car, that person is also capable and willing to spend ten or twenty thousand dollars on a watch. After all, when driving your high-end car around, you need to have a nice watch on that arm that peeks over the window edge.

The Singapore Grand Prix is a unique event for two reasons: one being that is the first and only race to take place at nighttime and in a city, in this case at the Marina Bay track in Singapore.

Franck Muller came out with a limited series of 120 watches called the Franck Muller Conquistador Singapore Grand Prix 2009 Racing Chronograph. Eighty of which are made from titanium and egral, a high-tech aluminum alloy, that due to its light weight and robustness is commonly used in the Formula 1 racing industry. Eighty other watches are crafted from titanium and 18K Rose Gold, and the remaining six are made from pink gold and feature a blackened titanium bezel. All watches measure 48mm wide by 62mm in length and 14 mm in thickness. The crystal is sapphire and the caseback has an engraving of the logo of the 2009 Singapore Grand Prix on it.

The Chopard Classic Racing Chrono F1 Singapore Edition

Another watchmaker to make a special timepiece for the Singapore Grand Prix, which actually took place at the end of September, was Chopard. For the second year in a row Chopard created and auctioned off a spectacular watch; this one sold for $35,000 at the President's Charity Challenge Luncheon. Officially called the 2009 Chopard Classic Racing Chrono F1 Singapore Edition, the design of this watch was inspired by a race car engine.

It features a distinctive dial and a large 45mm case. Made from 18-carat rose gold, and with a 1960s Dunlop racing tire-tread motif black rubber strap, this watch very much resembles the look and feel of a car. A screw-down/lock crown in 18-carat rose gold has a mini steering wheel on it. The logo and commemorative mention of the 2009 F1 Singapore race are engraved on the caseback.

Additional features of this watch include date display at 6 o'clock, a chronograph function with a 60 seconds counter at 3 o'clock, a 30 minutes counter at 9 o'clock and a 12 hours counter at 6 o'clock. It is a chronometer certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), which renders it appealing to those that appreciate the fine workings of either a chronograph movement or the mechanical engineering of a fine car.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day Date Chronograph (Singapore Limited Edition)

This special Carrera is highlighted with green, a color that is representative of both the TAG Heuer logo and the green borders on the night track of Singapore Grand Prix. The dial is checked which resembles Formula 1 racing and its super luminous index again reflects the glow of a race held at nighttime.

Other features include a 43mm case made in titanium, a green chronograph second hand, silver-toned hour and minute counters and a large day date window at 3 o'clock. The leather strap also has green stitching. This TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Day Date Chronograph was made in a limited edition of 250 pieces.

Last year, TAG's version of this watch, known as the TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 and produced in 150 pieces sold out in nine days, with one of the watches being auctioned off for $45,000.

Tissot & NASCAR

Tissot, being a maker of high-precision sports watches has since 2005, partnered with NASCAR to be the Official Timekeeper and Official Watch of this all 'American car racing series. Tissot has long been involved with motor racing. As part of this partnership Tissot has created a series of seven special NASCAR watches including: the T-Touch NASCAR, the T-Race NASCAR, the T-Tracx NASCAR, and the PR 50 Chronograph NASCAR among others.

Rolex & Grand-Am

Rolex has a long standing relationship with Grand-Am, which is owned by NASCAR. One of Rolex's best selling watches is its Daytona. Hopefully, the recent arrest of JC France, grandson of Bill France, who founded NASCAR and son of Grand-Am founder Jim France, and a regular driver in Grand-Am's Rolex Series won't taint the image of NASCAR or Rolex's sponsorship. France was arrested for driving under the influence and charged with possession of cocaine. He has been suspended from all competition.
